Lemuel MC is a brand that has a story to tell about linen, ethics, transparency and longevity. Founder Marta is a passionate advocate for a more sustainable lifestyle, stripping away complexity and working exclusively with linen and what is on hand wherever possible.
Lemuel MC works with an exceptional Lithuanian factory that purchases deadstock or sample fabrics in limited quantities and selects different weights to provide the wearer with a full year's worth of wear - with or without layers. Sustainability is woven into every process. Products are made to order and can be customized for a small fee. Production waste is collected and sorted; larger pieces are processed into hair accessories and beautiful individual pieces. Paper patterns are cut from found wallpaper from charity shops (in Marta's words: "Official patterns are expensive, and the quality of the wallpaper is perfectly textured"), and old irons are used to cut the patterns instead of purchasing new equipment. Clothing labels are made from off-cuts and hand-stamped in-house, while packages are lovingly wrapped in a range of wallpapers as individual as each Lemuel MC piece.
Linen is a woefully underrated fabric that Lemuel MC is spotlighting exclusively. Flax, which is used to make linen, is an ingenious plant that is incredibly resilient. This means that only minimal pesticides and much less water have to be used than, for example, when growing cotton (6.4 liters compared to 2,700 liters for cotton). The entire plant can be woven or used into fiber, meaning minimal waste, while also being biodegradable and recyclable. The fiber is incredibly strong and breathable with natural thermal properties. It's a chameleon of a fabric that can compete with wool, denim, cotton and silk without the associated environmental and humanitarian impacts.
Everything is consciously made with a zero-waste ethos, with leftover pieces being used for other products and projects. There are also free repairs for life - because Lemuel MC loves what they create for life.
